Our Mission

Too many pets are surrendered to shelters because their owners were unprepared for the real financial cost. We built PetCost-Calculator to solve that problem — giving prospective pet owners a clear, honest picture of what ownership actually costs before they bring a pet home.

Our goal is to be the most trusted, most accurate, and most useful pet cost resource in the world — not because it makes us money, but because it helps animals find permanent, loving homes.

Why Pet Cost Transparency Matters

One of the most common reasons pets end up in shelters is financial: owners take on a dog or cat without a clear picture of the true, ongoing cost, and are later overwhelmed by vet bills, food, insurance, and care expenses they never budgeted for. The purchase price is only a small fraction of what a pet actually costs — the real commitment is the thousands of pounds or dollars spent every year, for a decade or more.

We think the answer is better information, available before the decision is made. When someone can see that a particular breed will realistically cost them a certain amount each year — and can plan for the vet emergencies, the insurance, and the senior years — they make a more confident, more sustainable commitment. That is better for owners, and far better for the animals who get to stay in their homes for life.

What Makes Our Estimates Different

Plenty of articles quote a single national average for "the cost of a dog." We think that number is close to useless, because it hides the things that actually determine what you'll spend. Our estimates are built to reflect the real drivers of cost:

• Breed-specific data — size, lifespan, grooming needs, and known health predispositions all change the number.
• Location adjustments — the same pet costs very different amounts in a major city versus a rural area, so we apply regional multipliers.
• Full lifecycle view — first-year, annual, and lifetime totals, including the often-overlooked senior years.
• Hidden costs — emergency vet care, insurance, boarding, and training that single-figure averages leave out.

Our Commitment to Accuracy

Pet care costs move with inflation and local market conditions, so our figures are reviewed and updated regularly rather than set once and forgotten. We base estimates on current pricing for adoption, veterinary care, food, grooming, and insurance across the US, UK, and Australia, and we publish our assumptions openly on the methodology page so you can see exactly how each number is built. Where our data can't capture an individual situation — a specific health condition, an unusually high or low local vet, a particular insurer — we say so, and treat our results as a planning guide rather than a guarantee.

The calculator and all of our guides are free to use, with no sign-up required. To keep the site running we may earn a commission when readers choose to buy products or take out insurance through some of the links we provide — at no extra cost to you. This never changes the cost figures we show or the recommendations we make: our estimates are built from market pricing data, not from who pays us. Our priority is being genuinely useful to pet owners, because that is the only thing that keeps people coming back.
